Basic Facial Aftercare: What to Do in the First 48 Hours
By Lumi's Esthetics LLC | September 10, 2026
$95 Basic Facial in Marietta, GA | Roswell Road corridor near Marietta Square and I-75

The most important rule after a facial is simple: keep your skin calm for 24 to 48 hours. I’m picky about details and comfort in the room, but your results also depend on what you do once you walk out onto Roswell Road. Go gentle. Skip makeup, skip heat and heavy sweating, and don’t “test” your skin with strong products.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after a Basic Facial: keep it quiet
A Basic Facial at Lumi’s Esthetics LLC is built on the basics that actually move the needle: cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, plus extractions, facial massage, and masks based on what your skin needs that day. That means your skin is fresh and more reactive right after. In Marietta, humidity and heat can add to that, especially if you’re hopping back in the car to head toward Marietta Square or merging onto I-75.
48-hour rule of thumb: If it heats you up, scrubs you up, or speeds up cell turnover, it can wait.
Do this right away
- Cleanse with a mild, non-stripping face wash. Lukewarm water only.
- Moisturize with something calming and fragrance-free.
- Use SPF 30+ the next morning, even if you’re “just running errands.”
Skip these for the first day
- Makeup (especially heavier foundation). Let your pores breathe.
- Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and hot yoga.
- Intense exercise that has you sweating a lot.
- Picking, scrubbing, or “helping” a spot along.
A question I get all the time is: how long after a facial do you see results? Many people notice a glow and softer texture the same day, especially after massage and hydration. The deeper wins, like clearer-looking skin with consistent care, usually build over multiple visits.
Days 3 to 7: where glow sticks or fades
After the first 48 hours, most people feel “back to normal, ” and that’s usually when they overdo it. This is the week to protect the work we did, especially if you had extractions. I’m big on education during your facial, and this part matters as much as the appointment itself.
Quick reality check: If your skin feels tight, stings, or looks extra shiny in a “too polished” way, it’s asking for barrier repair, not more exfoliation.
What I generally want you avoiding until 72 hours (sometimes longer)
- Retinol and retinoids
- AHA/BHA exfoliants and peel pads
- Aggressive scrubs, brushes, and gritty exfoliators
Sun and sweat are the other big ones. In Marietta summers, a “quick” outdoor stop can turn into heat, humidity, and inflammation fast. Keep SPF in the front seat. And if a bump comes up after extractions, don’t pick. Let it settle and reach out so I can guide you.
The 5-minute express routine for Roswell Road days
Busy commuters and busy families don’t need a 12-step routine after a Basic Facial. You need consistency. If you’re heading back toward the Roswell Road commercial corridor, running through Marietta Square, or getting back on I-75, this is the version that works on real life.
Step 1: Gentle cleanse (no scrubs, no acids).
Step 2: Hydrate with a serum like hyaluronic acid (think “water, ” not “active”).
Step 3: Moisturizer plus SPF in the morning.
If your skin tends to clog easily in humidity, keep your hydration lightweight and non-comedogenic. You’ll still get that comfortable, bouncy feel without the “too heavy” finish.
Microderm facial, facial massage, and why aftercare changes a little
People use “microderm facial” as a catch-all phrase, but microdermabrasion is a more intense form of exfoliation than a typical Basic Facial. If you’ve had a more exfoliation-heavy service, you’ll usually need extra gentleness for longer. That means more hydration, more SPF, and a longer pause on retinol and acids.
Facial massage is the opposite. It tends to leave you with that “refreshed” look right away, and many of my clients mention the relaxation side too. But even when you feel amazing, aftercare still matters because we’ve just supported circulation and applied professional products. Your skin is primed, so protect it.
If you want a deeper overview of options beyond the Basic Facial, I keep it simple in our facial services in Marietta. If you’re newer and want a step-by-step picture before you book again, what to expect for your first Basic Facial is the easiest read.
Redness, bumps, “is this normal?”: when I want you to text or call
A little redness right after a facial can be normal, especially if we did extractions. Mild tightness can happen too if you’re used to stronger products at home. What I don’t want is you trying to fix it with more actives.
“She is knowledgeable, gentle, and makes sure you are comfortable the entire time.”

Reach out if you have increasing redness after day one, stinging that doesn’t calm down once you switch to gentle skincare, or any spot you’re tempted to pick because it “feels like it needs help.” I’ll tell you what to pause, what to keep, and what’s worth booking a quick follow-up for. I see clients from Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, Vinings, East Cobb, and Mableton, so even if you’re not right around the corner, you’re not on your own.
If you’re planning your next appointment, these two posts help you choose a direction: a Basic Facial refresh game plan and how I match the best facial services to your skin.
