Microdermabrasion Facial and Microdermabrasion: Clear Day-by-Day Post-Treatment Rules
By Lumi's Esthetics LLC | September 24, 2026
If you only follow one rule after your microdermabrasion facial, make it this: protect your skin barrier and stay out of the sun for the first couple of days. I’m big on education and clear steps, and I’ll always talk you through what your skin needs next so you keep that smooth, “my skin has never looked or felt better” finish going at home.
Quick context: Microdermabrasion gently removes the top layer of skin to even out skin tone and fade acne scars. I follow it with extraction, a mask, moisturizing, and sunscreen. Best results usually show up with a series of 3 to 6 sessions, so aftercare matters every time.
Your first 24–48 hours: gentle skin only (and yes, skip makeup)
Right after a microderm facial, your skin is freshly polished. That’s why I keep the first 24 to 48 hours simple. You’ll protect your result and lower the chance of extra redness or irritation.
Do this today
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water. No hot water, no scrubbing cloths, no cleansing brushes.
- Moisturize like it’s your job. A calming, fragrance-free moisturizer is usually the best move.
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF if you’re outdoors at all. Marietta sun is no joke, and our bright days don’t quit just because it’s “not summer.”
Skip this for 24–48 hours
- Makeup, especially heavy foundation. Your pores and barrier do better with a quiet day.
- Actives: retinoids/retinol, AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C, strong acne spot treatments, and anything “tingly.”
- Heat and steam: hot showers on the face, steam rooms, and saunas.
Marietta real-life tip: If you’re coming from the Roswell Road commercial corridor near Marietta Square or heading toward the Roswell Road/I-75 interchange, try to schedule so you’re not rushing into a sweaty commute. Freshly exfoliated skin plus heat plus traffic stress is not the combo you want.
Days 2–7: the “don’t overdo it” week that keeps your glow
A lot of people feel so smooth after microdermabrasion that they want to keep exfoliating. Don’t. This is the week where simple care tends to give you that bright, even look people notice. I’ve had clients dealing with breakouts and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation tell me they felt optimistic and hopeful after getting consistent care, and the home routine matters just as much as the appointment.
Sun, sweat, and water rules (especially in humid Marietta)
- Avoid direct sun and be strict with SPF. Even September can hit you with bright sun and surprise sweat.
- Hold off on heavy-sweat workouts for 24–72 hours. Light movement is usually fine, but intense cardio tends to sting and can prolong redness.
- Skip pools, hot tubs, saunas for 24–72 hours to reduce irritation and exposure while your skin is settling.
Product rules for the first week
- No retinoids, chemical exfoliants, or at-home peels for about a week. If your skin runs sensitive, I may have you wait a little longer.
- Don’t pick at any dry patches. Let them resolve naturally.
- Keep fragrance low. Heavily scented products often cause the “why is my face itchy?” moment.
If you’re doing a series for acne scarring, uneven tone, or dullness, this week is where consistency shows up. I’ve seen people who tried “expensive facials” elsewhere finally start to see real improvement once they got regular treatments and didn’t sabotage their skin with too much active product right after.
The simplest product lineup after a microdermabrasion facial
You don’t need a 10-step routine to keep your results. You need the right types of products, used consistently. I’m known for walking you through what I’m using and why, and I’ll do the same for your at-home routine so you’re not guessing in the skincare aisle.
My go-to “protect the glow” routine (by product type)
- Gentle cleanser: creamy or gel, non-stripping, no exfoliating beads.
- Barrier-restoring moisturizer: think soothing and hydrating. If your skin feels tight, you need more moisture, not more “acne fighters.”
- Mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+): reliable, low-irritation, and a must if you’re in and out of the car around Marietta Square.
- Calming serum: hydrating and soothing, with no active exfoliants.
If you’re driving back toward Kennesaw, Smyrna, Vinings, East Cobb, or Mableton after your appointment, keep a sunscreen in the car so you can reapply if your errands run long. That simple habit protects the brightness you just paid for.
Redness, irritation, and when I want you to reach out
Mild redness or a “warm” feeling is common right after facial microdermabrasion. It usually settles quickly, especially when you keep things gentle. But I also don’t want you sitting at home wondering if something is normal.
Usually normal
- Pinkness or mild redness for a day or two
- A slightly dry or tight feeling
- A little sensitivity to heat or spicy foods
Reach out to me
- Redness that lasts beyond 72 hours
- Blistering, severe pain, or significant swelling
- Signs of infection, like increasing warmth, pus, or spreading tenderness
People tell me they appreciate that I’m gentle, that I explain each step, and that I follow up. That doesn’t stop when you walk out the door. If something feels off, let me know and I’ll help you sort it out.
“Genuinely the best facial of my life!! Daniela made me feel so taken care of from start to finish. She cares deeply about her clients + has even reached out afterwards to help me build a skincare routine that’s suitable moving forward.”
One of our regulars
If you’re planning your next session, I usually recommend sticking to the series for the best change in tone and texture. Microdermabrasion works best that way, and it keeps you moving forward without needing a complicated routine.
